3000 Mosquito Nets For Children in Affected Areas

The Ministry of Health this morning received two thousand mosquito nets from the United Nation Development Fund (UNDP) for distribution in the affected areas of Tivoli Gardens, Denham Town, Trench Town, Delacree Park and Union Gardens.

This latest batch brings to 3000 the total number of mosquito nets donated to the Ministry’s malaria prevention and control efforts. The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) recently donated 1000 mosquito nets for children living in these communities.

“The support received from our local and international partners since the start of the outbreak has been excellent,” Dr. Marion Bullock-DuCasse, Director of the Emergency and Disaster Management Branch in the Ministry of Health said.

Among the households to benefit from the latest donation of mosquito nets are the 3,609 households visited in the last two weeks.

Dr. DuCasse said that the latest donation of 2000 mosquito nets would aid greatly in preventing further transmission in the affected areas. She also explained that the Ministry is aiming to have distribution encompass areas close to the affected communities.

In continuing Dr. DuCasses stressed that parents and guardians must use the nets along with other precautionary measures such as wearing appropriate light coloured clothing that covers the body. She also said that the application of insect repellant containing the chemical DEET remains very important.
