Ministry of Health to Host Display of Quilts Produced by Persons Living With HIV PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 01 December 2011 12:31
The Ministry of Health will be hosting a display of quilts produced by persons living with HIV during the commemoration of World AIDS Day 2011 from December 5-6, 2011.  The Ministry’s lobby at its head office on King Street in Kingston will be the venue for the display.  An opening ceremony is scheduled for December 5 starting at 10:00am.

The event comes as a quilt panel making workshop is being held from December 3-6, 2011 in Kingston to facilitate meaningful involvement of people living with HIV and develop the participants’ skill set in quilt making.  It is expected to include at least 20 persons. The quilts from this workshop will be the ones displayed at the Ministry.

The process is being led by the Positive Women in leadership, Jamaica Community of Positive Women (JCW+) and Jamaican Network of Seropositives (JN+) in collaboration with the International AIDS Prevention Initiative, Greater Involvement of Persons Living with HIV (GIPA) and Global Quilt. It is a part of the “Quilt for anti-stigma and discrimination project” whose objectives include:

  • Providing HIV positive women with the skill of quilt making to enhance psycho-social therapy and create another tool for anti-stigma and discrimination advocacy
  • To design panels for use in anti-stigma and discrimination sensitization sessions in the four health regions that will culminate World AIDS Day 2012
  • To sensitize and engender support for anti-discriminating behavior towards people infected and directly affected by HIV.

Persons are invited to sign on the quilt as an indication of their solidarity against stigma and discrimination. It is the expectation that the quilts panel making will continue in the Jamaican Network of Seropositives (JN+) self support groups and used at local HIV interventions. Displays are also to be done at faith based facilities across the four health regions on scheduled dates.
