Minister of Health, Hon. Rudyard Spencer says sustaining educational services, ensuring that there is sufficient access to development and training opportunities and access to services through the provision of qualified dental health professionals are important to efforts to reduce the incidence of chronic illnesses and improving the well being of Jamaicans.

Minister of Health, Hon. Rudyard Spencer says he will be taking the concerns expressed by the Joint Health Sector Group at a meeting today (Tuesday, March 9, 2010) to the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service to see how best they can be resolved. The parties met to discuss the issues raised about the public health sector job evaluation and reclassification exercise.

Minister of Health, Hon. Rudyard Spencer has appealed for the support of healthcare professionals to successfully undertake transformative work in the health sector. “The Government alone cannot accomplish the goals of broadening access to health care in a sustainable way. Our health care professionals must understand that there is more at stake than preserving status quo. No nation can grow and develop if its citizens do not have access to quality health care. A sick nation is a poor nation. There is a lot to be done to move the country forward. We rely on our staff on the frontline to give of their best,” he said.

Rudyard Spencer says international organizations such as the United Nations, the World Health Organization and the World Bank should exert their influence and raise their collective voice for an immediate and urgent assessment of the cost of migration of human resources in health and determine an appropriate mechanism for compensating developing countries.
