Ministry of Health urges continued vigilance as second wave of Influenza A(H1N1) is expected PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 02 October 2009 16:17

The Ministry of Health is urging continued vigilance by members of the public and is encouraging individuals to observe proper hygiene practices to protect themselves from Influenza A(H1N1) infection. The World Health Organization warns that there may be a second wave of the disease and therefore an increase in the number of cases is expected. Individuals should continue to wash hands frequently with soap and water or use an alcohol based hand sanitizer and cover the mouth and nose when sneezing and coughing.

Individuals should stay away from others who have symptoms of flu illness and stay home if they are ill, for at least seven (7) days from the onset of flu-like symptoms. However, medical attention should be sought if symptoms persist, get worse or if persons fall within the high risk group for complications. This high risk group includes pregnant women, children under five years old and persons with chronic illnesses such as asthma, obesity, diabetes and hypertension, heart disease or any condition that impairs the immune system.

The country has so far recorded one hundred and four (104) confirmed cases of the Influenza A(H1N1). For more information, persons may call the Ministry’s toll free line at 1-888-ONE LOVE (663-5683) or contact your parish health department.
