The Ministry of Health is reporting that another patient who was confirmed with the Influenza A(H1N1) virus has died bringing the total number of deaths to five (5). The patient who was within the high risk group died as a result of developing respiratory complications.
The Health Ministry is again appealing to persons who fall within the high risk group for complications from Influenza A(H1N1) to seek medical attention immediately as they begin to experience flu-like symptoms. This group includes pregnant women, persons with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, asthma, heart disease or any condition that impairs the immune system, children under five years old and persons over 65 years.
Dr. Sheila Campbell Forrester, Chief Medical Officer said “the Ministry of Health expresses sincere condolences to the family of the patient who died. I want to emphasize to persons in the high risk group that they should seek medical attention quickly so that we can commence treatment immediately if they have flu-like symptoms. This is necessary to reduce the likelihood of developing complications.”
She added that, “We are expecting a second wave of the Influenza A(H1N1) virus which will see an increase in the number of cases so the public must be more vigilant and take the necessary precautions.”
The precautions are: Observing good hygiene practices including washing hands frequently with soap and water, and covering nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing preferably with a tissue, which should be discarded appropriately. Individuals should stay away from others who have symptoms of flu-like illness and stay home if they are ill, for at least seven (7) days from the onset of flu-like symptoms. However, medical attention should be sought if symptoms persist, get worse or if persons fall within the high risk group for complications.
The country now has 118 laboratory confirmed cases of the virus. For more information, persons may call the Ministry’s toll free line at 1-888-ONE LOVE (1-888-663-5683) or contact their parish health department.
