The Resource Centre/Library and Documentation Services

The Ministry of Health Resource Centre is the focal point for all hospital and government nursing school libraries in Jamaica. It acquires, organizes and disseminates information on health and related areas to the Ministry’s staff, researchers, policy makers, students and the general public.

The Centre’s major objectives are:

• To provide adequate , coordinated and accessible health information which is accurate , current , properly organized and maintained within the Ministry.
• To provide the resources and methods for full continuing liaison and interchange between all the gatherers of health information , the processors and the disseminators.
• To be the focal point for the coordination and referral of health information requests.
• To be the focal point for “Access to Information” based on the requirements of the Act.

The activities of the Resource Centre are conducted through the:

· The Resource Center / Reference Library
· Audio –Visual unit

The Collection

This consists of over 8,500 books/titles, journals/periodicals, newspaper clippings, videos, slides, and CD-ROMS. It is also the recipient of medical documents from local and international organizations.

Areas of emphasis
Public health , family planning , health education , medicine and nursing.

Staffing

The staff compliment of the resource centre consists of :

Director, Librarian,1 Library Assistant and an Audio Visual Technician.

Opening hours

The Cnter is open daily to the public between the hours of:

10:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and

10:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. on Fridays.

Persons desirous of using the information resources are advised to call and make an appointment. (A suitable time will be given based on the availability of the information and the need of the client).

Services provided

Reference , referral, interlibrary loan arrangements , current awareness , selected dissemination of information, photocopying, exhibitions and outreach video presentations .
