The Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine is a Public Body established under the Professions Supplementary to Medicine Act of 1969, and accompanying Regulations 1974 and 2005.

 

The Council is headed by a Chairman and reports to the Minister of Health. The functions of the Council are to:

  • regulate the training of students in the specified professions.
  • register members of the specified professions, and
  • ensure the maintenance of proper standards of conduct by members of the specified professions registered under the Act.

Composition and operation of the Council

All members of the Council are appointed by the Minister of Health, one of whom is designated by him as Chairman:

  • One registered Medical Practitioner nominated by the Medical Association of Jamaica.
  • One registered Medical Practitioner nominated by the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of the West Indies.
  • One representative member nominated by each of the Professional Associations of the specified professions on Council.
  • Two persons (Government Nominees), appointed by the Minister of Health.

 

Each representative member has an alternate who may act as a member at any meeting, which the representative member is unable to attend. Members hold office for three (3) years. There is no restriction to re-appointment.

 

The Council meets on the 1st Thursday of each month.
