Physiotherapists or Physical Therapists are experts in movement and exercise; in developing and maintaining people’s ability to move and function throughout their lifespan. With an advanced understanding of how the body moves and the factors that can limit physical performance, they promote wellness, mobility and independence through the use of exercise activities. They treat and prevent many problems caused by pain, illness, disability and disease, sport and work related injuries, ageing and long periods of inactivity. They work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, health centres, schools, sports centres, education and research centres, hospices and nursing homes, rural and community settings.

The Jamaica Physiotherapy Association (JPA) is the national representative body. It provides support in wage negotiations, a forum for continuing education, and along with the Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine it maintains professional standards of practice and ethics. The JPA is a member organization of the World Confederation for Physical Therapists since 1972.
