Occupational Therapy is a health and rehabilitation profession. Its practitioners provide services to individuals of all ages who may have physical, developmental, emotional, behavioural or social deficits and, because of these conditions, need specialized assistance in learning or relearning skills to enable them to lead independent, productive and satisfying lives. The primary goal of Occupational Therapy is: enabling persons to participate successfully in activities of daily living (ADL), by enabling them to perform tasks that will enhance their ability to live meaningful lives or by modifying the environment to better support participation, and maximize function at their level of competence. Occupational therapy referrals are indicated for adult patients/clients with problems and diagnoses such as arthritic conditions, cerebral vascular accident (stroke), spinal cord injury, orthopaedic problems and traumatic brain injury. Occupational therapy is one of the main forms of rehabilitation services for children with developmental problems and birth complications such as cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome and autism. It is also indicated for patients with mental illness.
