Hon. Dr. Fenton Ferguson, Minister Of Health

HON. DR. FENTON FERGUSON MP, DDS.

 

 

 

The Honourable Dr. Fenton Ferguson was sworn in on January 6, 2012, as post- colonial Jamaica's Eleventh Minister of Health. He has brought to the Ministry of Health a wealth of professional experience gained both in Private Practice as Dental Surgeon of over 33 years in the parish of St Thomas, as well as over Fifteen years’ experience gained from 1978 to 1993, as the Ministry of Health’s Dental Surgeon in charge of Dental Health in the parish of St. Thomas.

 

The Honourable Dr. Fenton Ferguson was educated at Ardenne High School in Kingston and Howard University in the USA, where he made the Dean’s Honor role for three consecutive years on his way toward earning his BSc. Degree in Chemistry in 1974.

 

That same year, 1974, he was the winner of the Four -Year Government of Jamaica Dental Scholarship to pursue Dental Surgery at his Alma Mater, where he gained the post- graduate degree Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1978.


Dr. Ferguson was invited in 1989, to enter representational politics, and in 1993 he was elected Member of Parliament for St. Thomas Eastern. He has held that seat over five Consecutive General elections, in the process becoming the longest serving government MP, and the second longest serving MP overall, in that Parish.

 

Dr. Ferguson has been appointed to several Government positions over the 19 years, namely:

 

  • Parliamentary Secretary – Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture - 1995-1998
  • Minister of State – Ministry of Agriculture- 1998-2002
  • Minister of State (with responsibility for Works) - Ministry of Transport and Works- 2002-2006
  • Minister of State (with responsibility for Water) – Ministry of Housing Transport Water and Works 2006-2007; and now
  • Minister of Health

Additionally, Dr. Ferguson has served as:

 

Chairman of the Human Resources and Social Development Committee of the Parliament,

Member of the National Honours and Awards Committee, and

Member of the Infrastructure, Sub-committee of the Cabinet.

Dr. Ferguson is a Vice –President and Officer of the governing People’s National Party, a former Regional Chairman, and member of the Executive Committee of the Party. In 1996, at the behest of the Party, he successfully undertook the reorganization of the Party’s Youth Organisation. .

Minister Ferguson despite his busy schedule continues to be involved in Community Life. He is an Honorary member of the Lions’ Club of Portmore, and for the past 31 years, the Chairman of the Saunders Basic School.

 

Dr. Ferguson is the recipient of numerous awards, of which a few are:

 

  • The Washington Research Club Award for outstanding Scholastic performance in 1970.
  • The Jamaica Cooperative Credit Union League and the Jamaica 4-H Clubs – Chairman’s Award for outstanding leadership in 1996.
  • The National Council for Senior Citizens of St. Thomas Award for exemplary and continuous service in 2004, and
  • The St. Thomas 4-H Clubs Award for devoted service to Club in 2011.
