Jamaica commemorated Safer Sex Week 2009 from February 7-14, 2009. The focus was on encouraging sexually active women to buy, carry and use condoms, highlighted by the theme “Smarter Women Always Buy Carry and Use Condoms.” The focus was reinforced by a television advertisement which was aired during Safer Sex Week.
The initiative was a part of an effort to increase HIV testing among women and to build awareness on condom use by seeking to remove the misconception that women who purchase their condoms are promiscuous. The National Event for Safer Sex Week took place on Thursday, February 11, 2010 at the Half-Way-Tree Transport Centre in Half-Way-Tree, Kingston from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. The National HIV/STI Programme received six thousand (6000) pieces of Durex condoms from the Rotary Club of St. Andrew and provided these to persons at the National Event.
