World AIDS Day is December 1

On December 1, 2008, Jamaica will join the rest of the world in commemorating World Aids Day under the theme Youth: Take the Lead. By focusing its attention on young people Jamaica is prolonging a global campaign which commenced on December 1, 2007.

In Jamaica, the campaign targets young people ages 15 – 24, beckoning them to become advocates and agents of change.

“The focus on youths is timely as young people are extremely vulnerable to HIV/AIDS because of their involvement in risky lifestyle practices, common at those ages,” Dr. Kevin Harvey, Senior Medical Officer of the National HIV/STI Control Programme, said.

With reference to the 2008 knowledge, attitude, behaviour and practice (KABP) survey, Dr. Harvey reminds that HIV/AIDS is still the second leading cause of death for persons 15 to 24 years, and stresses the importance of fostering good morals and values among the young.

“It is especially crucial that parents and guardians pay keen attention to the development of good morals and values in our young people. We must make that kind of investment in the young as this is extremely important for the development of stable adults and a better Jamaica,” Dr. Harvey said.

Dr. Harvey also said the National HIV/STI Control Programme “remains committed to equipping young people with the necessary information, skills and attitude to stay HIV free”.

To commemorate World Aids Day 2008 a number of activities have been organized. On Thursday, November 27, 2008 the National HIV/STI Control Programme will disclose the latest HIV/AIDS statistics in a World Aids Day Press Briefing scheduled for the Ministry of Health and Environment at 10:00am.

A national church service will be held on Sunday, November 30, at the Swallowfield Chapel beginning at 7:30am.

World Aids Day celebration will culminate on World Aids Day, December 1, with an Exposition on the lawns of Devon House starting at10:00am. Throughout the day persons will have a range of activities to participate including free Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) service using the rapid HIV test.

The day’s expo will end with a grand concert starting at 4 pm featuring a DJ competition, and performances from Digicel Rising Stars Cameal Davis and Christopher Martin.
