JOB PURPOSE
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Environmental Health, the Environmental Officer – Water and Wastewater is responsible to assist in the development and implementation of comprehensive policies, regulations, and national guidelines aimed at safeguarding public health and environmental integrity. The incumbent will also be responsible to provide technical advice on environmental control factors to reduce or eliminate public health impacts on the population and the environment which includes drinking and recreational water quality, as well as wastewater treatment and disposal systems.
KEY OUTPUT
- Policies, guidelines and SOPs for potable water, recreational water and wastewater quality developed.
- Disaster management /Water safety plans developed and implemented.
- National guidelines for domestic and recreational water quality, wastewater treatment developed.
- National sampling regimes and feedback mechanisms developed and implemented
- Water and wastewater plants and supply inspection tool and audit developed
- Engineering Plans and specification for domestic supply streams and wastewater treatment reviewed
- Protocols and other documentation for water quality non-compliance prepared and implemented
Key responsibility areas INCLUDES:
Technical Responsibilities
- Collaborates with the Director, Environmental Health in the formulation of policies and short and long term objectives for the maintenance of domestic and recreational water quality standards, waste water management and pollution control.
- Develops national guidelines for Island wide sampling regime for chlorine residual, bacteriological analysis and periodic raw quality.
- Reviews and develops inspection tools for water and wastewater plants and supply.
- Coordinates research programmes relating to environmental pollution with relevant government departments (Ministry of Mining and Natural Resource etc.), statutory bodies (National Water Authority, Water Commission etc.) and educational institutions (U.W.I, UTECH).
Minimum Required Education and Experience
- B.Sc. in Environmental Health/Public Health Inspection or in any other relevant area
- A minimum of Five (5) years progressive working experience in the field of Environmental Health
- Training in managerial/specialised certificate and/or post-graduate diploma
- Must be registered with the Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine
