MEDICAL INTERNSHIP

Medical Internship is the first year of hands-on training for a newly graduated medical doctor.

Interns are placed in accredited public health hospitals for one year by the Ministry of Health and Wellness.

 

All Interns must successfully complete four, three-month rotations through the main four specialties (Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Internal Medicine, General Surgery & Paediatrics). Successful completion of Medical Internship is required for full registration with the Medical Council of Jamaica.

 

Kindly note there are additional requirements for Graduates of Medical Schools not accredited by The Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and Other Health Professions (CAAM-HP), also classified as Locum Interns.

THE SENIOR HOUSE OFFICER (SHO) PROGRAMME

This is a 12-month programme that aims to provide a further period of clinical experience post internship. The programme consists of three, 4-month rotations, including a mandatory rotation at the health centre (primary care level).

 

Successful completion of the SHO programme is a prerequisite for working with the public health system and the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) and for entry into the Doctorate of Medicine Programme of the University of the West Indies, Mona.
