Health Minister Condemns Assault on Nurse

KINGSTON, Jamaica. Friday, May 16, 2025: Minister of Health & Wellness, Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton, MP, has strongly condemned the physical assault of a nurse in an incident that was captured on video and posted to social media.

“I am shocked and outraged at the brutality of the assault. It is a heinous act, perpetrated against a member of the healthcare team – a team whose members consistently go above and beyond the call of duty in service to the people of Jamaica,” Dr. Tufton said.

“This assault, whether on our healthcare workers or Jamaican must not be tolerated,” he added.

The Minister has called on the police to move swiftly to investigate this matter and to ensure that the full extent of the law is applied.

“I implore the public to be respectful and protective of our healthcare workers, as they move about their business in the society,” added the Minister.

The nurse has been treated at the University Hospital of the West Indies and released. The Ministry will continue to offer support to the healthcare worker and family as appropriate.
