The Ministry of Health, today, is mourning the loss of Chief Executive Officer of the St. Ann’s Bay Regional Hospital, Mr. Albert Leo Garel, who passed away at home on Thursday, February 28.

Speaking today, Health Minister, Dr. Christopher Tufton, expressed sadness at the news of the passing of Mr Garel. “It is really a sad time at the Ministry of Health, the team from the Northeast Regional Health Authority and the St. Ann’s Bay Hospital. Mr. Garel has provided leadership for the hospital for the last 5 years and has been instrumental in the implementation of several programmes and priorities of the Ministry.  I express my deepest condolences to his family during this time.”

Mr. Garel served in public health for close to 19 years, beginning as Regional Personnel Manager for the Northeast Regional Health Authority (NERHA), then as Chief Executive Officer of the Annotto Bay Hospital in St. Mary, before bringing his skills to the St. Ann’s Bay Regional Hospital for the last 5 years.

Regional Director, NERHA, Miss Fabia Lamm also expressed shock at the sudden passing of Mr. Garel. “It is a sad day for the St. Ann’s Bay Hospital and the team at the Northeast Regional Health Authority. Mr. Garel was an outstanding leader and member of NERHA. He has made a significant contribution to the development of the hospital, bolstering the services it provides to St. Ann, St. Mary, Portland and other neighbouring parishes. He will be greatly missed, Miss Lamm said.

Since learning of Mr. Garel’s death, Dr. Tufton visited with staff of the St. Ann’s Bay Regional Hospital and with Mr. Garel’s family.
