JOB PURPOSE

Under the general direction of the Supervisor, Mental Health & Suicide Prevention Help Line and the Doctor, Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services; the Mental Health & Suicide Prevention Help Line Counselling Psychologist is responsible to provide first responder counselling to callers in crisis and or overwhelming situations.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS

  • Assist the supervisor in the preparation of Operational Plan for the functioning of the programme;
  • Prepare an individual work plan to be approved by supervisor;
  • Assist in the preparation of the monthly, quarterly and annual reports through the analysis of data and other pertinent information;
  • Provide on-the-spot crisis counseling;
  • Offer advocacy services for victims.
  • Act as liaison for callers to access social, health and other services
  • Assist in the organization/scheduling and implementation of meetings
  • Maintain records in collaboration with the administrator/clerical officer
  • Follow-up on service users:
  • Did they access referrals;
  • Progress with services accessed;
  • Outcome of services accessed;
  • Ensure proper completion of all log sheets callers information sheets/dockets;
  • Participate in the evaluation of callers issues with case studies as a means to sharpen skills and build capacity;
  • Represents the mental health services at meeting with MDAs and other agencies as necessary;
  • Facilitates and conducts research on mental health issues;
  • Delivers educational talks and presentations to civic groups, schools, parent teachers association, churches and other community based organizations on topics related to psychology;

 

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • In Counselling Psychology;
  • At least two (2) years’ experience in telephone counselling;
  • At least five (5) years’ experience as a Counselling Psychologist for children and adolescents;
  • Licensed to practice as a Psychologist
  • Specific training and expertise in crisis intervention would be an asset
